History
The
Pekingese
gets his
name from
the ancient
city of Peking,
now called
Beijing. The Pekingese
or 'Peke' are imperial
dog. They appeared
as far back as
2000 B.C. The Pekingese
were worshipped
in the temples
of China for centuries
and often
the Emperor
would choose
four Pekes for
his bodyguards.
They would accompany
the Emperor to
special occasions,
carrying his royal
robe in their mouths.
The smaller Pekes
would reside in
the emperor's sleeve.
Theft of a Peke,
or injury to one
of them was a crime
punishable by death.
In 1898 the first
Pekingese came
to America. In
1906 they were
intered into the
A.K.C. They have
done well, often
being in the top
25 of registered
breeds.
